Ford Fiesta RS Turbo. AUCTION FINISHED
The RS Turbo by Ford was ditched after just two years and replaced by the RS1800 in 1992 due to a change of emissions legislation for 1993 (all new cars needed catalytic convertors) Under the bonnet was the new 1.6 litre 4-cylinder turbo engine which produced 134bhp and gave a 0-62 time of 7.8 secs and a top speed of 137 mph.
To help the driver with all of this extra power some adjustments were made to the previous XR2i’s suspension, which was your standard hatch combo of MacPherson struts at the front and trailing arms connected to a torsion beam at the rear. Adding to the XR2i’s lowered and stiffened set-up, the RS Turbo added a 20mm rear ant-roll bar and some camber and castor changes, plus a quicker steering rack (although the unassisted set-up was still a dizzying four turns lock-to-lock).
As was tradition with the Fast Ford dept, the exterior of the RS Turbo was designed to let other road users know exactly what you were driving. The blue pinstriping of the XR2i was replaced with green, while the bonnet was which had a pair of vents added. At the rear there was a colour coded tailgate spoiler and set of 14-inch three-spoke alloys wrapped in 185 section tyres. Colour choice was limited to Radiant Red, Diamond white, Black and Mercury Grey metallic, inside there was a pair of Recaro seats, plus a light grey interior for the three-spoke steering wheel and gearknob.
The odometer indicates 78,315 miles from new.
The bodywork of this RS Turbo presents in very good order, with flush shut lines and no evidence of any panel damage. The is a small amount of paint bubble just below the windscreen on the driver’s side.
Moving inside, the car features its original grey fabric interior, with red and blue checks sat on fantastic Recaro seats. The vendor has reported driver’s seat bolster is described as being very good, with no apparent rips or tears. The factory-fitted steering wheel and manual gear knob are still present and correct. As with the exterior, the cabin is in superb order for its age.
The service book only shows service up to the car being 5 years old and 38,000 miles. The car has been in storage for the last 16 years and has only covered 3,000 miles in the last 20 years. The dates of the MOT listed below show proof of the mileage and also show the years the car was SORN.
1993 @ 31,823 miles (car 3 years old)
1994 @ 43,416 miles
1997 @ 48,416 miles
1998 @ 52,871 miles
1999 @ 59,659 miles
2000 @ 75,660 miles
2002 @ 76,698 miles
2018 @ 78,233 miles
2019 @ 78,315 miles
This RS Turbo is a remarkably clean example of a popular and period-perfect hot hatch and represents a rare opportunity to own an unmodified example of this fun modern classic and would make a great addition to any garage.
