Ford’s Fiesta XR2i has always had a large following, primarily from "boy racers", but is a car that most people identify with. It was never breath taking in the performance department, but good looking, affordable and reasonably quick, it established itself in the early 90’s as a popular hot-hatch and soon became an institution.

The success of models such as the Peugeot 205 and Fiat Uno mean Ford went for bold with the third-generation Fiesta in 1989. Out went the boxy lines and ageing underpinnings of the first two models, and in came a slicker look and more sophisticated mechanicals. More importantly, the car was available with a five-door bodystyle for the first time.

A longer wheelbase meant the Mk3 set the class standard for space, while semi-independent torsion beam rear suspension helped the ride and refinement.

This more grown-up approach extended to the interior, which had a far more modern design. The neatly laid-out dash borrowed switchgear from the larger Escort, while the novel injection-moulded seats were more comfortable yet compact. The Mk3 also got a heated windscreen and anti-lock brakes.

There were changes under the bonnet, too, where Ford’s latest line-up of efficient High Compression Swirl engines was used alongside the existing CVHs. For hot hatch fans, the big news was the arrival of fuel injection, resulting in the XR2i with up to 110bhp.

Climb aboard a Mk3 today and it’s not hard to see why it was such a leap forward. The neatly laid-out dash looks modern, while the bright fabrics and large glass area create an airy atmosphere. On the move, the standard car’s ride is soft and composed unlike the firmly suspended later Zeta-engined XR2i in our pictures.

This Ford Fiesta XR2i is a well-presented example of a classic British performance hatchback from the ‘90s.

This XR2i is a rare and iconic Fast Ford from the heyday of the hot hatch. Fitted with the peppy 1.6-litre engine, this Fiesta has been driven and enjoyed as intended, and presents in good order today.

First registered on 10th August 1990, H310HFX now displays only 46,000 miles on the odometer. Considering the mileage, this XR2i appears to be in very smart condition. It presents as a well-preserved example with just 3 previous owners from new.

Finished in Radiant Red, the current owner states the paintwork is in good condition for its age and mileage. There is one small mark on the rear tailgate which shows a small sign of rust and will need attention. it is shown in the pictures. The panel work is straight with no known damage, and the paintwork remains bright and presentable. There are a few detail imperfections around the grille and door shuts which are again visible in the pictures. The wheels fitted are the originals alloys are in good condition.

The interior trim is akin to the high standards of the exterior with the original velour seat covers only showing signs of wear in high contact points such as the driver’s seat bolsters. The plastic trims again present very well for their age. High touch areas such as the steering wheel and dashboard switchgear again remain in good order.

All electrics are reportedly in full working condition and although an upgraded stereo has been fitted, the original equipment radio cassette is also included in the sale.

Offered with a stamped service record up to 54,246 miles in 2001, there are unfortunately no additional maintenance records until very recently – though there is online MOT history showing the mileage accrual between 2006 and the present day. In September 2019, a new fuel pump was fitted in the petrol tank.

The most recent MOT test was on 14 November 2020 at 46,046 miles.

Pleasingly, this car retains its original Ford owner’s wallet, housing the stamped service record, user guides and various period literature – including a copy of the original purchase agreement from 1992.

This Ford Fiesta XR2i represents a great opportunity to own an increasingly rare ‘90s hot hatch, with aggressive styling, a characterful engine and a very well-preserved interior. Some recent cosmetic renovation helps to elevate this example’s desirability, not to mention its highly original condition.
